Strasbourg beat Crystal Palace 2-1 after coming from behind at the Stade de la Meinau. The Eagles’ hopes for finishing in the top-eight of the UEFA Conference League have been dashed. Jean Philippe Mateta, the France giant striker, was responsible for the opening goal. He first did well to hold off his opponents on the edge the box before finding Tyrick Mitchel with a cheeky pass.
Left-back Mike Penders, on loan from Chelsea and playing for Strasbourg, had to work hard to get his shot into the corner. Just seconds later, the visitors almost doubled their lead when the Chelsea goalkeeper went walking.
Ismaila Sarr was unable to score from a distance of 30 yards. Palace paid for this missed opportunity when Strasbourg equalized eight minutes later after a team goal which Emanuel Emegha converted at the far post.
Oliver Glasner’s side paid the price 13 minutes from the end, when the ex-Brighton striker Julio Enciso’s lovely free kick hit the bar. Samir El Mourabet (19 years old) was quick to react and score the rebound.
Crystal Palace will now be 18th on the Conference League table.
