Manny Pacquiao’s score was low on all the scorecards before he defeated Chatchai Sasakul

Pacquiao’s first world championship was won on this date, December 4, 1998. This was before he beat Miguel Cotto in a high-profile title bout, Ricky Hatton and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Relatively unknown at the time, the 19-year-old Filipino challenged Chatchai Sasakul for the WBC flyweight title in the champion’s home country of Thailand.

The local favourite was unbeaten in 13 previous fights, and had successfully defended his belt twice. Sasakul was looking good through seven rounds.
