Friedman reported that Hughes was believed to have “slipped, and cut his hands, in what many sources call a fluke accident.Friedman said that it is still unknown if Hughes will be sidelined for more than one match due to his injury. The Devils had announced on Friday afternoon Hughes was out with “a non-hockey hand injury”.”He is currently being evaluated, and we will give an update when available,” wrote the Devils. Devils forward Arseni gritsyuk previously posted a photograph of what looked like a team meal at Chicago Cut Steakhouse. Hughes has been plagued by injuries for the past two seasons. He most recently missed the entire 2024-25 season after undergoing shoulder surgeries in March. Hughes now joins a list of Devils injured, including Dougie Hamilton, Connor Brown and Cody Glass. In a corresponding move, AHL forwards Nathan Legare (left) and Shane Lachance (right) were called up. Losing Hughes and possibly Glass will test the Devils depth in the middle during Saturday’s Washington game. Nico Hischier, Luke Glendening and Dawson Mercer will be given more work. In Hughes’ absence, Dawson Mercer may be asked to move to the center. The Devils aren’t the only team that is keeping an eye on Hughes’ availability. Hughes is in line to join his brother Quinn Hughes on the U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.
