Tom Brady Declares No Allegiance to 49ers: ‘You Chose a Goat Farmer Over Me’

Tom Brady may have taken the San Francisco 49ers’ refusal to draft him in 2000 as personal. Tom Brady revealed that, in his most recent episode of Storytime with Tom Brady, he does not have any warm or fuzzy feelings towards the team that he cheered for when he was a young boy growing up near San Mateo in California. Brady explained that his allegiance towards the Niners was lost when the team passed him over six times in 2000’s draft. “Every time I played the Niners, I just wanted to make sure that the coaches who were out there at the time that you chose a goat farmer over me — and I never forgot that.” The 49ers famously selected Hofstra quarterback Giovanni Carmazzi in the early third round of 2000 NFL Draft. They did so 134 picks ahead of the New England Patriots, who took Tom Brady as the 199th pick. Carmazzi was a disaster with the 49ers. He spent only two years there and never played in a regular season game. His playing career ended by 2006, and he became a farmer following his retirement from football.Tom Brady on Bay Area Homecoming: A Special Win Against the 49ers By the time Carmazzi became a farmer, Brady had already racked up three Super Bowl titles, creating an interesting — if not frustrating — what if for the 49ers. Brady had won three Super Bowls in his time with the Patriots. The 49ers could have signed Brady when he was a free agent and redeemed themselves. After a rumored internal debate, the 49ers decided to keep Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback and let Brady sign with Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This decision led to the 49ers watching Brady win a Super Bowl in another team’s stadium. Brady was added again in 2023. Brock Purdy had an elbow injury and his status for that year was uncertain. Brady refused to sign with the 49ers, despite Kyle Shanahan trying to do so. Brady didn’t just hold a grudge towards San Francisco after he was drafted in the sixth round at the NFL Draft 2000. Brady stated that “they all passed me six times.” “In actuality, the Patriots have passed me over five times.” They were only one less than everyone else. It all worked out.Brady reminisced on the 49ers passing him over in the 2000 NFL Draft, as he returns to the area where his childhood was this weekend to announce Sunday’s match between the Los Angeles Rams vs. 49ers (4:25 pm. ET on FOX, FOX Sports App and FOX. In his final game in the Bay Area, Brady laughed at the 49ers because they passed on him. Purdy, who was making his first career start, beat Brady as the 49ers thrashed the Buccaneers 35-7 in 2022. Brady said that the Buccaneers kicked Brady’s butts. Brady’s playing days with the 49ers were better remembered. In fact, Brady said that his 30-17 victory over the 49ers by the Patriots in 2016 was one of the best moments of his career. The moment almost was ruined.  Tom Brady scored four touchdowns during the Patriots’ 2016 win over the 49ers. Brady remembered that it had rained the moment he touched the ground. “It hadn’t rained for nine months in California, but as soon as we hit the floor, it started to rain,” he said. “It rained for the whole day on Saturday.” When I went out to warm up for the game on Sunday, I thought: ‘Oh, it’s going to be a little drizzle.’ It started to downpour and I was like, of all the times to come to the Bay Area, it’s pouring rain and I’ve got more family than ever at this game. I had so many tickets, probably over 100 people came to this game. “We went out there and I went out there for pregame warm-ups and they started chanting my name, ‘Brady! Brady!’ I thought that it was the coolest idea in the entire world.Brady repaid them by putting on a stellar show. Brady threw 280 yards with four touchdowns on that day. Each touchdown pass was to a different recipient. Julian Edelman was also having a great day. He caught eight passes from Brady for 77 yard and a touchdown. Brady said, “It was a fantastic team performance.” “I remembered kneeling on ball on final snap and thinking, ‘Man, that might go down as one of the coolest football experiences I’ve ever had.Want great stories delivered straight to your inbox?” Sign up for a FOX Sports account or create one to follow your favorite leagues, players, and teams to receive a daily newsletter!
