After Dana White announced Jon Jones’ retirement, bringing to an end months of frustration as he refused to fight Tom Aspinall, the Briton was elevated to undisputed status. His reign did not get off to a good start in the main event of UFC 321, where Ciryl Gane badly poked Aspinall’s eye to cause a no-contest.
While a rematch was expected to be quickly made, Aspinall has yet to recover and recently revealed the considerable damage he is dealing with as a result of the Frenchman’s foul.

Josh Thomson predicts Alex Pereira to face Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC title
Aspinall’s medical report detailed a number of conditions that could leave him sidelined for the foreseeable future.
In a recent podcast episode, former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Josh Thomson analyzed what this could mean for UFC’s heavyweight division.
Not long after confirmation that an interim title is headed for lightweight in Ilia Topuria’s absence, Thomson believes the same could happen at heavyweight in 2026, paving the way for Alex Pereira’s shot at becoming the first triple champion in UFC history.
“It’s not gonna be Tom if Tom’s not ready to train,”Thomson revealed the details of the upcoming heavyweight title bout.
“So I think what they’re gonna do is — I really believe that it would be Alex vs Gane.
“There’s also video footage, recent video footage of Alex Pereira sparring heavyweights,”He added.
“With Tom Aspinall not willing to fight, Alex steps in to save the day — because that’s what he does — and becomes an even bigger star.”
