Tom Aspinall continues to have bad luck. UFC 321 should have been a way to bring the heavyweight champion back into action after a long time of inactivity. In the end, an eye poke caused Saturday’s main bout with Ciryl Ganne to be a frustrating one. Aspinall was eager to have an active reign as undisputed champion, after Jon Jones had vacated his title in June. Saturday started out rough and then got worse. Aspinall was beaten in the first round by challenger Gane, who had been the underdog. Aspinall’s chances of competing were ruined by an errant poke to the eye in the final thirty seconds. The result was a no-contest. Mackenzie Dern was aided in her victory by her daughter, cagside. The title vacated previously by Zhang Weili went to Mackenzie Dern. Nurmagomedov was in a tough spot when Bautista tried a deep submission and then led a big knee. In a unanimous verdict, the cousin of Khabib Nurmagomedov swept all judges’ scores. He is likely to wait for the champion Merab dvalishvili or Petr Yan, who will meet in December.
