Paul George injury update: Sixers star to make season debut against Clippers

ESPN reports that the Philadelphia 76ers are one step closer to being at full strength when Paul George plays his first game of the season against his former team, Los Angeles Clippers. George’s first year in Philly was a tough one. He played in only 41 games, and had his worst stats since his second season in the league. This offseason, George underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after suffering an injury in a summer workout, causing him to miss the first 12 games of the Sixers’ season. The Sixers, without George, have been one the NBA’s pleasant surprise, going 7-5, thanks to Tyrese Maxiey, who has played at an All-NBA level, and VJ Edgecombe, the third overall pick, who is a frontrunner for the Rookie of Year. Nick Nurse will need to be very careful when adding George back into his lineup. It is not as easy as simply putting in an All-NBA former player and expecting the Sixers to improve.

George’s addition to the Sixers line-up could present some challenges. Three of their most successful players so far this season are wings: Edgecombe (left), Quentin Grimes (right) and Kelly Oubre. Nurse and his team will have to adjust their roles to accommodate George’s return while still maintaining the same style of play which has helped Philly thrive so far this season.

The Sixers should accept this challenge, since George remains one of the NBA’s most versatile wings. He struggled last year to find his place alongside Maxey, and Joel Embiid – who has also been in and out the lineup again this year. But perhaps Philly’s new emphasis on accelerating the pace of play can bring a little more out of George.
