Newcastle United vs. Tottenham: Where to watch the EFL Cup as Tottenham look for attacking consistency

The EFL Cup is a very important tournament for both teams. It would have been a different event if it were held a year earlier. However, that does not mean it’s any less meaningful. The Magpies are the reigning champions of this tournament, while Tottenham also ended a trophy drought by lifting the Europa League, but both teams have rotation concerns while balancing Champions League play, but it’ll still be an important clash for both in pursuit of back-to-back seasons winning a trophy. How to watch Newcastle United vs. Tottenham, oddsDate: Wednesday, Oct. 29 | Time: 4 p.m. ETLocation: St. James’ Stadium — Newcastle Upon Tyne, EnglandLive stream: Paramount+Odds: Newcastle United -165; Draw +290; Tottenaham +380Early on this campaign, Tottenham are challenging Arsenal for their title as “Set Piece FC,” but it’s also papering over cracks in their attack. Tottenham have five more goals scored from dead ball deliveries than any other top English club. Van Deven has a monopoly of these goals, scoring three in Premier League games. Tottenham’s overall attacking performance is impressive, as they have managed to score 17 goals with an xG value of just 10.08. Thomas Frank’s Brentford team also used set pieces to attack teams on the break, but Tottenham hasn’t been successful in doing that because the midfield struggles to create opportunities. A trip to Newcastle will not help either. Eddie Howe made the Magpies more defensively sound after losing Alexander Isak. It has allowed an xG rating of 7.27 during Premier League play. Only Arsenal is higher. Newcastle has six points after their first three Champions League fixtures, while Tottenham has five points. Both teams are on the right track to progressing out of the League phase. However, Tottenham’s performance is cause for concern.

Van Deven is their top scorer, ahead of Richarlison who has three goals. Richarlison has also failed to score in his seven last appearances across all competitions, despite a strong start to the season. Randal Koo Muani still hasn’t scored his first club goal and Dominic Solanke remains injured. It’s impressive how Tottenham’s improved defensive performance has gotten them this far, but that can only continue for so long. Pape Saar and Lucas Bergvall both had good moments as 10, but neither have been able to do the job of a box-tobox midfielder. Archie Gray could get the chance. He is only 19 years old. Gray, a highly-rated recruit from last season, played 90 minutes at left back against Monaco in the Champions League. His two-way abilities could give him a shot facing Newcastle United.

If he is able to help Tottenham defeat Howe’s solid defense, he will have an easier time getting more playing-time. However, it won’t be easy for him to do the latter, as a spot in last eight of cup is on the line.
