ESPN reports that the New York Liberty have hired Golden State Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco to be their new head coach. DeMarco was the Warriors assistant for four NBA championships and also the head coach of the Bahamas men’s basketball team. He was an assistant in the NBA All-Star Game both in 2015 and 2017 as well. The Liberty won their first title in franchise history 2024 and started the season 9-0. Injury setbacks ultimately ended their campaign and the Mercury eliminated them in the first round. Brondello was not re-appointed as Liberty’s coach a couple of days after they lost Game 3. Brondello led the Liberty to a 107-53 record during his four years in charge. The Liberty won a franchise’s record 32 games both in 2023 & 2024. Brondello won the Commissioner’s Cup in 2023, as well as their 2024 WNBA title.
Jonathan Kolb, the Liberty’s general manager and his team felt that despite Brondello’s successes, it was important to take a new direction in order to maximize their championship window. Kolb explained in his interview with the Liberty that after this season, and seeing the influx of changes on many teams it was clear to them the timeline for making a decision. “You can choose to stand still or embrace the change and go forward. I will continue to push the New York Liberty forward. “We believe that this change will give our group a new energy and freshness.”
As every team in this league, the Liberty has only two players contracted for 2026: Leonie Sabally and Nyara Fiebich. This will be an exciting offseason. Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu have both expressed a wish to return. However, it is unclear how the free-agent system will operate after a new collective agreement has been ratified. Natasha Cloud and Emma Meesseman will also be a big decision for the Liberty, in addition to trying re-signing their Big Three.
