The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation is a mess. This time last year they were on their way to the playoffs with Sam Darnold in charge.
The Vikings, this time, are 4-8. It’s a bad season, and they don’t have a quarterback to replace them.
JJ McCarthy was drafted by the Vikings in the first round of the 2024 draft. It’s obvious that the Vikings are committed to the young Michigan passer. Darnold did have a good season last year, and the Vikings would have been able to give him that job if they had wanted to.

Darnold, who is 28 years old and still playing at his best under Vikings Coach Kevin O’Connell could have continued to do so for 10 or 12 more years.
The Vikings had drafted McCarthy, and felt that they should give him the opportunity to play on the field in order to support their belief that McCarthy was the right guy to move forward in Minnesota.
It does not appear that this is the case at the moment. Weekend reports indicated that the Vikings had offered Darnold a contract worth around $100.5 million, but for only one year instead of three with the Seahawks. The Vikings had an option.
