Golden Globe nominations for combat sports have revealed a mixed bag.
The year 2025 was a major one for biopics about fighting, as films were released based on the lives of UFC legend Mark Kerr (and boxing icon Christy Martin).
Kerr was played by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in The Smashing Machine, while Martin was portrayed by Sydney Sweeney in Christy.
Johnson was widely praised after the Kerr biopic’s release, with many branding it a career-best performance for the former WWE star despite the movie underperforming at the box office.
His portrayal of the MMA icon has earned him a nomination in the drama category for best male performance. There was no such love, however, for Sweeney or UFC commentator Joe Rogan’s hit podcast.

Joe Rogan does not get Golden Globe nomination despite podcast success
Christy received mixed feedback. While Sweeney’s performance received plaudits from some reviewers, that was unable to save the boxing biopic from bombing at the Box Office.
It earned $1.3 Million in North America during its first weekend. This film is not among the top 10. It took $1.305 million to open in 2,011 theaters, which is only $649 each. This was one of the poorest openings ever.
While Johnson’s performance earned a Golden Globe nomination in spite of box office struggles for The Smashing Machine, the same cannot be said for Sweeney.
This was not just a Golden Globes-related snub. Joe Rogan Experience also missed out on the award for the best podcast.
The UFC color commentator’s podcast has been the most listened to show on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube in 2025. A number of high-profile podcasts deemed controversial missed out despite superior listening figures, which appears to be the reason behind Rogan’s omission.
The 83rd edition of the Golden Globe Awards takes place at The Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on January 11.
