Football Gary Lineker and Micah Richards gave their verdicts on Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres after the Swede’s goal in Saturday’s win over Burnley. The 27-year-old found the net first against Scott Parker’s side at Turf Moor, before Declan Rice sealed the Gunners’ victory with a second goal before the break. It marked Gyokeres’ sixth goal for the north London outfit since his £64million summer switch from Sporting CP. The striker has struggled to impress since joining Mikel Arteta’s squad. He had failed to score in any of his five Premier League appearances prior breaking his duck. City Richards, a defender for Arsenal and Lineker, formerly of Tottenham Hotspurs, shared their opinions on Gyokeres while analysing the recent win by Arsenal.”Can Gyokeres be the difference between winning and losing big matches?” Richards asked on Monday’s The Rest Is Football podcast.”He is stretching well, but he misses a lot of chances that could be against them in the final stages of the Champions League or when things get tough in league. Gyokeres has to make the difference in games against larger teams, and also in the later stages of the Champions League.Lineker admits that Gyokeres needs to continue his scoring form during the Premier League’s most important matches, as Arsenal seeks its first title since 2004.”I agree. He said it would have helped him yesterday to score. Victor Gyokeres scored(Image: David Price/Arsenal FC through Getty Images). It does not really matter. For strikers, it is important because I believe he went five Premier League matches without a single goal. It would help him as when you hit those small patches, you start to question yourself.”People would criticize him for not scoring against top teams. He has scored goals only against Burnley Forest and Leeds.”I accept your argument and I agree that he must perform in big games. But I do think he is off to a decent start. Alan mentioned it about a week ago. He has given them a different look.”He is a player who likes getting behind defences. It makes the defenses drop deeper and gives the Arsenal playmakers and Declan Rice more space.”It’s working for the moment but I understand that he should do it during a Champions League game or other big match. Overall, I’d say it’s been a decent start but nothing extraordinary. He’s clearly not Haaland but then again, no one is. He’s unique.”Join Mirror’s new WhatsApp community to receive your daily dose.” Football content. We offer our members special promotions, offers and ads from ourselves and our partners.
