Richard Torrez looked distraught after suffering a crushing one-punch loss to Frank Sanchez in Giza.
The Cuban delivered a stunning right hand to leave Torrez flat on his back looking up at the tips of the Egyptian Pyramids.
Torrez had been the favorite heading into the fight and he started fast, using his southpaw left hand to back Sanchez up but the Tulare, California, heavyweight ran into a crunching right uppercut 55 seconds into the second round and his night was over.
The fight, originally scheduled for May, was an eliminator for Oleksandr Usyk’s IBF heavyweight title.
“Usyk, we’re ready for you whenever you want,” said Sanchez.
The Cuban who fights out of Florida, trained by Eddy Reynoso, is now 26-1 (19 KOs). His only loss came to Agit Kabayel.
“I’ve been working this whole time in the gym for this opportunity,” said Sanchez. “I stayed with the plan. I was working with my trainer a lot because I knew he came in with his head down and he told me to throw that uppercut and that’s what came through.”
Torrez is now 14-1 (12 KOs).
