The 2026 World Cup will be an historic event in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico due to its size and expansion to 48 teams. But it could also mark the end of a era. Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese football superstar, said that this World Cup may be his last in an interview with TUTISE Tourism Forum in Saudi Arabia.Ronaldo replied, “Sure it’s true, because I’ll turn 41 in a few months, and this competition is great, I don’t know… As I said, this moment, I am enjoying,” he said. He did backtrack a little on when he might retire, joked about it being as soon as 10 years. But if this World Cup is Ronaldo’s last, then it could be his only chance to win – if he wins it. Ronaldo has won the UEFA European Championship in 2016, the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and in 2025 twice, but he’s never won the World Cup. It is one of his few trophies he doesn’t have.
Last week, in an interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo also spoke about his World Cup ambitions.”Winning the World Cup doesn’t represent a dream to me. One tournament does not make you a great player. “It is unfair that there are only six or even seven matches.”
It doesn’t necessarily mean he would not like to win a World Cup, especially after Lionel Messi won his first World Cup with Argentina in 2022, and La Albiceleste is among the favorites for this tournament. Ronaldo’s absence from the Portugal team would be hard to imagine, but this could happen sooner than later.
