Coventry was the subject of intense debate when it came to Coventry City Frank Lampard, a club legend, was replaced by Mark Robins almost a year earlier.
Coventry, who came back from a semi-final defeat last season to win the Championship this year, has been the team that is by far the best in the Championship. They are the last unbeaten team left in England’s top four divisions.
Friday, 31st of October at 7:30pm
Kick off at 8:00pm
It’s not only the fact that they are unbeaten, but also the way in which it has been achieved. The team’s start was marred by too many draws. However, they now have six wins in a row. They have scored 34 goals and no other team has scored more than twenty. Only two sides, both by one goal, have better defensive records than theirs.
Coventry have also a goal diff of +25. This is despite the fact that no other team has managed a positive difference between goals in the double digits.
Who are the top two scorers in your league? Coventry players Brandon Thomas Asante has nine and Haji Wright eight. Thomas-Asante had scored 11 goals before this season, a total that he achieved at West Brom 2023/24 and with Salford. City League Two. He looks like the most dangerous finisher in League Two.
The league’s second most assists belongs to the right-back Milan van Ewijk. Carl Rushworth has the most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in the division.
Matt Grimes had more touches and more passes completed than any other midfielder. It is dominance in all aspects, and an improved team than any of its rivals. It is even more impressive that this feat was achieved by a team without the luxury parachute payments.
Lampard had to quickly win over the sceptics after stints in the Premier League with Chelsea (twice), Everton, and after replacing Robins who took the club from League Two up to just one penalty kick of the Premier League. His sacking caused general dismay. He did this by steering them to the play-offs during the last season. He is currently riding the Sky Blue wave to greater heights.
Coventry’s incredible start & the records they could break
Coventry’s incredible record
Coventry is one of only four teams to have a longer run without a loss than a Championship team. All four of these sides have won promotion.
Coventry has scored 34 goals in 12 games, the most for a second-tier team since Wolves’ season of 1965/66.
Only five of the 21 teams that led a Championship Table after 12 matches (since 2004/05), failed to gain promotion.
Reading holds the record with 106 points for 2005/06. Coventry, with their current average of 2,33 points per match, would finish at 107. Most goals in a seasonFulham’s 2021/22 championship-winning side holds the record. Aleksandar Mitrovic was responsible for 43 out of their 106. Coventry has 34 goals in 12 matches. With 2.83 goals per match, they’re on course to score 130 in this season. Best goal difference ever recorded by a Championship teamReading’s +65 goal difference from 2005/06. Gary Weaver, Sky Sports Essential EFL Podcast: “It’s more than just the scores.” You can see that they’re the best team in the Championship if you look at all the statistics. They are the best team of the Championship. Frank has shown his willingness to adapt tactics. He switched to a three-man back against Portsmouth, to counter their physicality. And he may do so again against Wrexham.”Brandon Thomas Asante has scored seven goals in the last seven matches. Blackburn came close to signing him in the early part of this year. Frank is always adapting, as I said. I’m a big fan of the continuity, which we have already mentioned. They were strong in the playoffs and unfortunate to lose Sunderland. They have not only maintained their momentum, but they’ve improved after just a few summer signings.I know Frank Lampard tries to downplay it, saying that it’s just the Championship, and anything could happen. But right now, they are way ahead of the rest.”Lampard: the run won’t be forever

Lampard is also keen to prevent his team from getting too excited before their trip to Wrexham. He said, “I only want to win matches.” It won’t be forever, because football is a sport. But we’ll take it one game at the time.”You learn from your mistakes and then move on. We don’t care about records, we only focus on the next match.”Each adversary presents different challenges and we need to adapt. Some games start off well and go your way. Others are harder.”We always make sure that the players get the right information. But we focus on our strengths, what we are good at, and how we can enforce it each week.Confidence and momentum can be great, but you will lose them if you lower your standards. We need to continue promoting confidence and keep the right feel on the training field.
