Talented Scot Nathaniel Collins will have the opportunity to do what he failed to do previously, when he meets Spain’s Cristobal Lorente in a rematch.
Sources have confirmed that the rematch is heading back to Scotland on April 18, with the formal announcement forthcoming.
The two boxed to a hard-fought draw at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena last October, when many in Scotland hoped a Collins victory over the European featherweight champion would lead to a world title fight and big-time boxing returning to the country after the retirement of Josh Taylor.
But Lorente had other ideas. Despite a solid start from Collins, the visitor boxed his way back into the fight and the bout finished with the scorecards at 115-113 apiece with the third card level at 114-114.
Collins, who had impressed with an emphatic stoppage of Lee McGregor in his previous fight, moved to 17-0-1 (8 KOs), while Lorente is now 20-0-3 (8 KOs).
Collins maintained his No. 1 spot with the WBC while Lorente stayed at No. 2.
Bruce Carrington is the WBC titleholder at the weight. Although Lorente is unranked by the other sanctioning bodies, Collins is No. 8 with the IBF and No. 9 with the WBO.
Incidentally, Lorente had drawn his previous fight, going 12 rounds with countryman Ruben Gil in Spain last July.
