Tulane is back in the running for Group of Five College’s College Football After Friday’s win in Memphis, the American title race is again reshaped. Jake Retzlaff, who threw for 332 yards and scored three touchdowns during the fourth quarter of the game, helped the Green Wave (7-2), to defeat the Tigers comeback attempt. Football Memphis (8-2, 4-5) was ahead of all the other teams in the bracket and would have ranked at No. North Texas (8-1), Navy (71-1), USF (71-1), Tulane, and East Carolina (5-3) are among the teams that have only one loss in conference play within the American. If tiebreaker scenarios are used in the American in a few months, the conference will first look at the ranking of one team that is tied. If the team does not lose during the last conference weekend, they will be declared to be a title game participant. Alex Golesh’s Bulls will play a playoff eliminator game at Navy next weekend after USF beat UTSA Thursday night. North Texas, which has won three consecutive games, is in good shape with an open weekend this week and can clinch a spot in the American Championship if they win out against UAB Rice and Temple.
East Carolina lost a head to head match against Tulane. This puts the Pirates in contention. The Pirates will host Charlotte this Saturday, before finishing the conference season with Memphis, UTSA, and FAU.

Tulane, which ended Memphis’ 11-game winning streak at home, has a chance too.Tulane’s coach Jon Sumrall was proud of his team for their resiliency. While the selection panel did not provide data on James Madison or San Diego State, they are two potential conference champions in the Sun Belt and Mountain West. They could even be ranked above the American winner a few months from now.
The Aztecs (7-1 and 4-0) have a perfect conference record, with their only setback occurring on September 6 against Washington State. San Diego State will play Hawaii in week 11, then Boise State, and New Mexico at the end of the season. These three teams have six wins and can boost this team’s record if they win. After Saturday’s matches, the selection panel should be more transparent this week about who they think is leading the Group of Five with just a few games left.
