College football conference tiebreakers for SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12, American

It’s time for tiebreakers and different scenarios to be sorted out within the SEC. The Power Four are expected to take 11 spots in College Football Big Ten tiebreakersThe Big Ten race appears to be the easiest heading into the last month of the year. Both teams will be able to meet in Indianapolis, if they both win their respective schedules. Oregon and Iowa will play on November 8, each with one conference defeat, which will eliminate a team from the conversation for the championship game. USC, which has one conference loss against Illinois, will play the Ducks as well next month. If the Wolverines beat Ohio State five times in a row and win the Big Ten, things could get messy. There are also tiebreaker scenarios with multiple teams that have one loss.

The Big Ten will be comparing the tied teams based on their head-to-head matchups during the regular season. The tie-breaking procedure will compare the teams based on their head-tohead matchups in the regular season. B. The tied team will be compared against the common opponent with the best record in the conference and moving up the list of common conference opposition based on order. The tied teams are compared on the basis of the highest cumulative conference winning percentage among all conference opponents. SportSource Analytics’ (team rating score metric) highest ranking will determine the representative. The representative will then be selected by a random draw conducted by the commissioner, or his designee.SEC TiebreakersThere are six teams in the SEC that are separated by just one loss. To determine the game’s participants, we will use the following procedure: Head-to-head competition among the tied teams B. Record versus all common conference opponents among the tied teams C. Record against highest (best) placed common conference opponent in the conference standings, and proceeding through the conference standings among the tied teams D. Cumulative Conference winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams E. Capped relative total scoring margin (see Appendix A) per SportSource Analytics versus all conference opponents among the tied teamsF. If a tiebreaker results in two teams being tied for first place, both are selected for the championship match. Two teams are tied for first place in the league standings. To determine the seeds, the two teams must go through the tiebreaker procedures. This will determine the home and the away designation of the SEC Championship Game.

The SEC will follow the following procedure in the event that two teams are tied for second place:A. Head-to-head competition among the two tied teams B. Record versus all common conference opponents among the two tied teams C. Record against highest (best) placed common conference opponent, proceeding through the Conference standings among the tied teams D. Cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams E. Capped relative total scoring margin per SportSource Analytics versus all conference opponents among the tied teams F. Random draw of the tied teamsIf there’s a three-team tie for first place, those aforementioned steps will be used in descending order until two teams who stand alone are determined.ACC tiebreakersGeorgia Tech and Virginia are the only teams with unblemished conference records entering November. They will meet in Charlotte at the end of the year if both  out. Miami is the leader of a group with five teams who have one conference loss and are still mathematically alive.

The ACC policy states that if two teams or more are tied for the highest percentage in wins, or if three teams or more are tied for the second highest percentage, then the following tiebreaker is used:A. For a two-team tie, head-to-head competition between the two tied teams. B. Win-percentage against all common opponents. C. Win-percentage against common opponents based upon their order of finish (overall conference win percentage with ties broken) and proceeding through other common opponents based upon their order of finish. D. Combined win-percentage of conference opponents. E. The tied team with the highest ranking by the Team Rating Score metric provided by SportSource Analytics following the conclusion of regular-season games. F. If there are three or four teams tied at the top of league standings, then the following will be applied:A. Combined head-to-head win-percentage among the tied teams if all tied teams are common opponents. B. If there are no common opponents between the teams, then the team that beat each other is the winner. Win percentage against all common opponents. D. Win percentage against common opponents based upon their order of finish (overall conference win percentage, with ties broken) and proceeding through other common opponents based upon their order of finish. E. Combined win-percentage of conference opponents. F. The tie-breaking team will be determined by SportSource Analytics’ Team Rating Score, which is based on the results of the regular season. Big 12 tiebreakersThe Big 12 race has joined the SEC and ACC at the end of the season as one that is chaotic. BYU is separated by one game in the standings from Cincinnati, Texas Tech, and Houston.

Here’s the Big 12’s tiebreaker procedure, enacted in 2024, that will be used in determining the two teams who play at AT&T Stadium in December in the event of a two-team tie for second:A. Head-to-head competition among the two tied teams. B. Win percentage against all common conference opponents among the tied teams. C. As you move up the standings, win percentage is calculated against the next highest common opponent (based on all games played in the conference). When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s win percentage against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure) rather than the performance against individual tied teams. D. Combined win percentage in conference games of conference opponents (i.e., the strength of conference schedule). E. Total number wins over a 12-game period. The following conditions will apply to the calculation of the total number of wins — only one win against a team from the FCS or lower division will be counted annually. Any games that are exempted from counting against the annual maximum number of football contests per NCAA rules shall not be included. F. Highest ranking by SportSource Analytics (team Rating Score metric) following the last weekend of regular-season games. G. Coin toss If there are multi-team ties in the Big 12, which is a high-probability this season, the following procedure will be followed:A. The records of the three (or more) tied teams will be compared based on winning percentage in games among the tied teams — if all teams involved in the tie did not play each other, but one team defeated all other teams involved in the tie, the team that defeated all other teams in the tie is removed from the tiebreaker, and the remaining teams revert to the beginning of the applicable tiebreaker process (i.e., two team or three or more team tie). Also, if all teams involved in the tie did not play each other and no team defeated all other teams involved in the tie, move to the next step in tiebreaker. B. The records of the three (or more) tied teams will be compared based on winning percentage against all common conference opponents played by all other teams involved in the tie. C. The record of the three or more tied teams will be compared to the next highest common opponent (based on all games played in the conference), moving up the standings. When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s win percentage against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure) rather than the performance against individual tied teams. D. Record of the three (or more) tied teams based on combined win percentage in conference games of conference opponents (i.e., strength of conference schedule) E. Total number of wins in a 12-game season. The following conditions will apply to the calculation of the total number of wins: Only one win against a team from the FCS or lower division will be counted.American tiebreakersThere are seven teams separated by a single game  in the American standings. Navy and Tulane remain the only unbeaten teams against conference competition. The tiebreaker rule in the American League is slightly different from that of its Power Four counterparts. The following procedure will be used in the event of a multiple-team tie:

If there is no Head-to-Head result and one of those tied teams has the most recent CFP Selection Committee ranking and does not lose on the final weekend in regular-season conference, they will be declared as a Championship Game participant. If there’s no head-tohead result and one of two tied teams is ranked in CFP Selection Committee rankings but loses on the final weekend of Conference play and the CFP Selection Committee ranking, then the composite average of selected computer measures (Connolly S+, SportSource SOR, ESPN SOR and KPI) are used to determine which team will participate in the Championship Game. The higher-ranked team in the CFP Selection Committee ranking that does not lose the Conference regular-season final weekend will be the Championship Game participant if there is no head to head result. If there’s no head to head matchup, and neither tied team wins on the last weekend of conference regular-season, a composite score of selected computer-metrics (Connolly S+, SportSourceTR116 SOR or ESPN SOR) will be calculated after the games are over. If the teams are still tied, use win percentages against all conference opponents. The CFP rankings play a vital role in the tiebreaker policy of the American. The selection committee’s first top 25, which will be published on Nov. 4, is the result of their work.
