Kristaps Porziņģis was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) after the 2024-25 season, and the star player acknowledged that it significantly impacted his play for the Boston Celtics during the playoffs. The Athletic’s Fred Katz reported that Porzingis said, “It was like a truck hitting me.” “The breathing wasn’t good. My engine was not running as well as I would have liked.Mayo Clinic says that POTS affects the autonomic system, which controls the involuntary bodily functions like heart rate and bloodpressure. Postural tachycardia Syndrome occurs when the nerves which regulate blood flow become out of balance. This means that not enough blood is delivered to the correct place at the appropriate time. This can cause a number of symptoms including an excessively rapid heartbeat, especially when you move from lying down into standing up.”Other symptoms are chronic fatigue, headaches and nausea. Porziņģis told Katz his heart rate would rise to as much as 130 beats per minute when he stood up.You know when people say, “Oh, I am so tired?” I’ve never said those words. I don’t speak that way, but I was really like this,” he continued. “At the time, I was a couch cat.”Porziņģis is now on a high-salt diet and has changed his rest schedule off the court to combat the condition. He is entering his first season in Atlanta Hawks’, a team that has high expectations following a busy preseason. A newly-energized Porziņģis should be a fun pick-and-pop partner with point guard Trae Young, with a slew of talented wings surrounding them.”We are an aspiring team, a young team that aspires to win a championship one day, and that’s the cool part,” Porziņģis told Katz. Even by the odds, we are not far away.
