Things did not go to plan for ‘The Big Boy’ on MMA’s biggest stage. While Despaigne’s 18-second finish at UFC 299 marked the perfect debut, he would go on to lose his next two fights.
The bronze medalist of taekwondo in the 2012 Olympic Games, who was exposed for his grappling weaknesses by Waldo Acosta and Austen Lane.

After a controversial refereeing call, Robelis Despaigne knocks out Sam Alvey brutally.
Robelis has definitely found a place under the Karate Combat banner, where his latest result added a championship to his résumé.
The Cuban rebounded from his UFC setbacks by knocking out his opponent in The Pit in just four seconds in December last year. Despaigne finished his second fight in only 12 seconds the month after.
Five wins in a calendar year is a record for him. Combat 58, having emerged victorious from three bouts in one night to win the promotion’s Last Man Standing tournament in July. Despaigne won the tournament and was awarded a shot at heavyweight title.
After Friday’s event was delayed by over three hours, the 6ft 7in behemoth finally got his chance to challenge Sam Alvey, a fellow ex-UFC fighter who has enjoyed a resurgence in Karate Combat Since the longest unbeaten streak in Octagon History.
But the American’s fairytale run came to an end at Karate Combat In round two, a brutal head kick knocked him out.
Alvey was in no position to continue after being knocked down, and he was already standing on his own. The referee, however, saw things differently and allowed the fight to go on, paving the way for Despaigne’s title-winning head kick KO.
