Sky Sports chief correspondent Kaveh Sohekol explains how the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw will be redesigned to include a ‘tennis seeds’ format. This could mean England is able to avoid the top seeded teams until later stages.
You can find some clues. The new seeding system will prevent England (seeded number four) from meeting either the European champions Spain (1 or world champions Argentina 2) until the semi-finals. They can’t play France until the final.
England is in Pot 1. Scotland is in Pot 3, while England is in Pot 1. This means that they could be drawn into the same group as at Euro 2020.
In a group, a maximum of two European sides can be present. In no group can there be more than one team from another confederation.
Northern Ireland has a long way to go to qualify. Their play-offs are in March. They will learn who their opponents are. They’ll be in Pot 4, who will do the draw?
