Chelsea Women secured a quarter final spot in Women’s Champions League by beating Wolfsburg 2-1, after coming from behind in their last league phase match, and finishing third in table. This will allow the Blues to avoid a mid-February play-off, which would have been a major disruption in their hectic fixture schedule. The draw for the knockout round will be made on Thursday at 12pm.
Wolfsburg’s dominant performance early in the game threatened to undermine Chelsea’s position in the top four, which would have guaranteed a direct entrance into the quarter-finals.
Alexandra Popp took advantage of Livia Penng’s failed clearance. She rounded Keira Walsh and fired a low shot that was hard past the goalkeeper.
Chelsea became the first English club to defeat Wolfsburg on German territory.
The quarter-finals were held in Budapest due to Covid regulations.
Wolfsburg made the most of their opportunities. Both teams continued to exchange blows. Lucy Bronze kept Chelsea’s game alive twice with her defensive work. She cleared Lineth Beerensteyn’s shot off the line and then a well-timed tackle in the box stopped Kessya Bosse from scoring.

She then equalised moments later at the opposite end by nodding in Erin Cuthbert’s corner just minutes before half-time.
Stina Johann denied Cuthbert’s goal after Alyssa tapped the post.
Sam Kerr secured the three points for the team in the 64th minutes. She was unmarked near the post when she nodded home a Johanna Rytting Kaneyrd cross, scoring her 20th Champions League for Chelsea.

Wolfsburg didn’t make it easy either. The result is still the same, with Wolfsburg finishing ninth, but by one point. This means that they are unseeded in Thursday’s draw and will play either Real Madrid, or Juventus.
