It was difficult not to think that the U.S. national men’s team had received a version of the best-case scenario as a group of prominent USA athletes picked random countries out of a hat. The group stage was not dominated by difficult teams, as the USA had earned a Pot 1 spot. They also happened to draw teams they have very valuable – and very recent – experience facing.First came Australia, the team they beat 2-1 in October. Paraguay was the next team, which they had beaten 2-1 in November. At the end came a twist – a little slip of paper with four teams’ names on it, the quartet set to face off in a playoff in March for one of the few remaining tickets to the World Cup. Romania, Slovakia, and Kosovo comprise three-fourths, while Turikye is the fourth. In June, the USMNT lost 2-1 to Turikye.Christian Pulisic stated hours after the drawing, “I think we’ll be able to go in with a good attitude.” We’ve seen these teams in the past, which isn’t always the case. So we have a good idea of what to expect. We will not take anyone for granted. All of them will be difficult games, but I think that it’s wonderful that we’ve had that experience. It’s great that they were in the exact same situation as us. It’s awesome that some of those friendly matches and some others were able to help us prepare for some of our actual opponents.”
