UFC 1 star was outweighed by 200 pounds against sumo behemoth whose teeth he kicked into the crowd

The UFC’s ‘beginning’ came 32 years ago today.

The idea of bringing martial arts together to see who would be victorious began over 30 years ago after Art Davie, a marketer, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Legend Rorion Grecie collaborated.

The UFC 1 took place on November 12, 1993. At the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado, the Octagon appeared for the first time as practitioners from different fighting styles competed in an eight-man tournament.

The action began with a battle between French Savate karate fighter Gerard Gordeau, who was a former sumo wrestler and died in 2005, and Teila Tuli, a late sumo wrestler.

The first UFC bout featured a 200 pound weight disparity, which was a far cry compared with modern MMA. It was not the larger man who raised his hand.
