Texas completes largest comeback since 2007 with OT win at Mississippi State

No. Texas, ranked 22nd in the country, came back from a 17 point deficit to win 45-38 against Mississippi State after overtime. This is the biggest comeback victory for the Longhorns since they erased an 21-point Oklahoma State deficit in 2007. Texas is only the second program to win multiple overtime games within a single season. The Longhorns had a similar scare in Week 8 against Kentucky. Texas was down 38-21 in the fourth quarter with 10 minutes to go after Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen scored a touchdown of 62 yards on a connection between running back Davon booth and Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen. It was then that the Longhorns took charge. They responded with a quick, nine-play scoring drive of 75 yards, which culminated in a 21 yard scoring connection between wide receiver Emmett Mosley V and quarterback Arch Manning. The defense then forced a three-and out, and the offense moved the ball again with ease, allowing kicker Mason Shipley hit a 26-yard goal to cut Mississippi State’s advantage to 38-3.

Mississippi State once again failed to take time off the clock. The Bulldogs made a poor decision by punting the ball, and Texas’ Ryan Niblett took it 79 yard for the game-tying score with 1:47 on the clock. Niblett also played a key role in Texas’ victory over Kentucky. He returned two punts totaling 88 yards, which allowed the Longhorns score some important points. He returned a kick for a touchdown two weeks ago in a victory over Oklahoma.
Mississippi State was painfully close to a field goal at the end regulation. Shapen, however, fumbled an attempted pass on third and 6 which forced the Bulldogs punt the ball with less that 10 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Texas was faced with more adversity when Manning left the game in overtime after his head hit the ground. He took a while to stand up, and with the team trainers of Texas he went to the medical tent. It was now Matthew Caldwell’s turn to be the hero. Caldwell lofted an impressive pass to Mosley on his second snap. Mosley then made a similarly impressive catch in the endzone to give the Longhorns the touchdown. Texas’ defense then dominated the game. Mississippi State’s defense was able to force a fourth-and-20 situation after two procedural penalties. Shapen, who was desperate for a conversion attempt, was sacked 32 yards down by Ethan Burke.

Manning’s best performance in his career was enough to save Texas’s season, even though he left the game too late. He completed 29 of his 30 passes for 346 yards, a new career high. He also scored three touchdowns. He also ran for a score. Texas is now 6-2 for the season and 3-1 in SEC games. Next week the Longhorns are up against another big test as No. Next week, the Longhorns face a new challenge as No. The 15 Missouri team that beat No.
