Sean O’Malley seems to think that even if he wins his next fight, he might struggle to book a rematch with Petr Yan.
The pair’s 2022 fight was controversial, with the American taking a razor-close decision win in Abu Dhabi that catapulted him into title contention and eventually winning the belt. After one defence, he lost the title to Merab Dvalishvili, and after losing an immediate rematch he seemed on the division’s periphery.
He now has a claim to fight the newly-crowned champ, especially if that means getting a match for one of most disputed decision in recent years. Song Yadong, his first three-rounder since the Yan bout, will be up next month at UFC 324.

Petr Yan seemed uninterested in Sean O’Malley rematch after UFC 323
Saturday night the focus of discussion was a trilogy involving Merab Dvalishvili, Petr Yan, and their respective rivals. The two have already fought, with the Georgian prevailing about as easily the first time around as his opponent did the second.
But Sean O’Malley’s name was brought up, and Yan didn’t seem all that keen on giving his old rival the rub and a shot at the belt again.
Petr Yan should fight the next opponent.
