UFC 322 was not just a major event for the welterweights but was also an important fight for lightweights.
Islam Makhachev debuted as a welterweight when he competed against Jack Della Maddalena on Saturday for the 170lb championship after having vacated his lighterweight title earlier in the year.
The Russian star won the unanimous decision after dominating the five rounds. He is now the latest fighter in history to win titles in two weight classes.
And with his win, the 34-year-old could have potentially set up for one of the biggest fights in the sport’s history against current lightweight king, Ilia Topuria.
This fight, which is a strong possibility for the UFC White House Card in June next year, could ruin the plans of many fighters. 155lb contender Paddy Pimblett, for example.
