Manchester United: Club bosses quietly satisfied with progress under Ruben Amorim a year on from Erik ten Hag’s exit | Football News

Manchester United’s executive office at Carrington hasn’t celebrated their recent impressive results. Instead, they are satisfied that the club is making progress. The club hierarchy has been reassured that their tough decisions are beginning to show on the field and have strengthened their resolve to keep going with the long-term plans.
Ruben amorim wants to be in Europe next season. Omar Berrada, the chief executive of the club and Jason Wilcox, director of football would certainly be satisfied with an eighth place finish. Amorim’s squad is still being developed, and no one should be too happy when things are going well, or too disappointed when results are bad.

Here’s a look at Erik Ten Hag’s best and worst moments at Man Utd

While there has been a lot of noise outside Old Trafford urging for a heavy investment to be made in the squad, the executives are determined to stick with the plan. United will not be spending big money in January. A new defensive midfielder is the priority for strengthening the squad after last summer’s focus on attacking areas. A No. 6 would require a large investment, and with Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton all being considered, it’s more likely that this will be done in the summer as part of an overall review of the squad, and the wage bill.
Amorim was able to reduce a large and expensive squad by moving many players with high salaries who were not part of his plans. The futures of many of Manchester United’s top-level players remain uncertain.

Marcus Rashford still has 2 1/2 years left on the contract he signed with Manchester United. Harry Maguire and Casemiro will both be out of contract this summer. Any decision to let them go would allow the squad to save a large chunk of their salary budget. Rasmus Hojlund’s move to Napoli will only be guaranteed if Antonio Conte’s team wins the Champions League.

Watch Senne’s confident Premier League debut for Manchester United versus Sunderland

The focus of the summer to strengthen the attack appears to be paying dividends. Manchester United’s xG was actually lower in the last three games compared with the first six matches of the season – but the statistics show that United is being more clinical with their shots, with a whopping 20 per cent producing goals this past month compared with just 7.4 percent previously. The style of play, too, has been changed, as United has gone more direct. In the last three games, the team has averaged less than 44% possession compared to over 53% for the rest the season. Senne Lammens has been kicking long almost 85 percent of the time with him at the goalposts, compared to Andre Onana’s 43 per cent, and Altay bayindir’s 56 per cent.

United did not plan to replace Lammens in the summer despite their interest in him for a long time. Onana’s poor form and the fact that Jadon Sancho was not included in the total cost meant that a deal for the 23 year old could be made. The stats show he’s had a positive impact on the field. The 78.6 percent save rate is over 11 per cent higher than Onana and 25 per cent more than Bayindir.

Gary Neville, in his podcast, said that Ruben Amorim had his best week at Manchester United after winning against Liverpool and Brighton

The Portuguese coach is showing signs of flexibility in his team’s structure. Manchester United may line up three-deep at the back but they can sometimes play as a four-deep defense when one or both wingbacks drop deeper. It was typical of United’s recent past that after the loss to Brentford, stories would start to leak out about players not being happy or losing faith in their head coach. United’s managers know that they are only at the beginning of their revolution. They expect some bumpy roads as they seek stability and ultimately silverware. But, for now, at least, there is peace at Carrington as the club’s top brass feel that things are going in the right way.
