Last Night in College Basketball: Anderson Shines While Texas Tech Sets Record

Men’s college basketball, women’s college basketball – there’s no shortage of college ball, every night.Don’t worry, we’re here to help you figure out what you missed but shouldn’t have. Christian Anderson, Texas Tech, is the star of the season opener. After Elijah Hawkins and Chance McMillan graduated and Kerwin Williams and Darrion William transferred to other schools, Anderson took the spotlight. The 6-foot-3 guard showed that he’s capable of carrying the load, scoring 34 points – the high for any player in any college basketball game on Tuesday, one ahead of Drexel’s Laine McGurk – and dishing 11 assists in the No. The No. 10 Red Raiders won their season opener 98-60 against Lindenwood. This was Texas Tech’s 26th consecutive season opening win. Anderson went 3-for-7 beyond the arc while Donovan Atwell topped the deep heaves with a 6-for-13 performance. The bench added four more threes on 12 shots. Everyone in the starting line-up hit at least one. Stirtz introduces himself againBennett Stirtz, along with coach Ben McCollum, have been a team. Stirtz has been a dominant player at every stop, from Northwest Missouri State, Drake and now Iowa. Stirtz continued to dominate in his Power-4 debut as he scored 19 points and had six assists, four steals, and four steals on Tuesday against Robert Morris Colonials, in a 101 – 69 Iowa win. As you might have deduced from the final score, the Hawkeyes had a lot of contributions. Stirtz was the leader in points but there were plenty of others. Six players had at least 10 point, including Tavion Bans, who finished second with 17 points and four rebounds. Alvaro Folgueiras also had an impressive all-around performance with 11 points in 18 minutes, along with 3 assists, 5 rebounds, and three rebounds. UConn, the defending NCAA Women’s Tournament Champions and No. 1 in the country, opened their season by playing against No. The game was not played in Germany, as originally planned, but instead took place on Tuesday at Louisville. The Armed Forces Classic was held in Annapolis, Maryland instead, marking the first time that women’s teams were the featured game at the annual event. Wisconsin transfer Serah Williams scored just 4 points in her debut, but collected 8 rebounds – the second-most on UConn on Tuesday – while dishing four assists, as well, including this one to Sarah Strong.Strong led all scorers with 21 points, while 2025’s Final Four Most Outstanding Player Azzi Fudd chipped in 20. UConn had no 3-point game, but they still went 4-for-26 and made all eight free throws. Loyer scores 30, Painter scores anotherThere are two camps when it comes to Fletcher Loyer – those who want to replace him because of inconsistency in big moments, and those that back him. His opening-night performance was certainly a big moment for the latter group, which includes Loyola coach Matt Painter – he had some choice words for those who disagree with him in the postgame, after Loyer dropped 30 on Evansville.Purdue is the preseason No. 1, and with significant expectations this season, so Loyer is going to need to keep on racking up the points to quiet the opposition in more ways than one.Oregon squeaks out a WNot a buzzer-beater by the strictest definition of the word, but Oregon cut it real close all the same on Tuesday against Hawai’i.Takai Simpkins scored the last of his 18 points – first among all scorers in the game – with just 2.5 seconds left on the click, to put Oregon up by one. Hawai’i didn’t score in the remaining time, so the Ducks moved to 1-0. NC State comes back against TennesseeNo. NC State and No. The season opener was a back-and forth affair between No. 8 Tennessee, and No. 9 NC State. NC State led 25-24 at the end of the first quarter. However, after the second quarter the Lady Vols had taken the lead back. And after three quarters Tennessee had gained their lead again. Khamil Pierre, from NC State, hit the go-ahead layup and Zamareya, from Tennessee, hit two free-throws with less that two seconds remaining in regulation to give them an 80 77 lead. Pierre led NC State with 21 points and also had 14 rebounds, 3 steals, and a blocked shot. Zoe Brooks tallied 13 points, 5 assists and 11 rebounds. Boozer had a rough debut. Freshman Cameron Boozer failed to score in the first 20 minutes of the game against No. Boozer’s performance in the second was much better. Boozer finished with 13 rebounds and 15 points in the game’s second half. Another Flagg debutsDuke basketball is now without Cooper Flagg, who went first overall in the NBA Draft in 2025. But college basketball now has a new Flagg. His twin brother, Ace Flagg, is following in their mother’s footsteps at the University of Maine for the Black Bears – Kelly Flagg is a Maine Sports Hall of Famer who was on the Maine squad that upset Stanford in the 1999 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament – Maine’s only win, on the men’s or women’s side, in tournament history.Monday marked Ace Flagg’s debut for Maine, and while it didn’t go well for the team – they scored just 47 points against George Washington University in a loss, fewer points than in any game last season – he was a bright spot.Flagg played 29 minutes off of the bench, scoring 10 while picking up 3 rebounds, an assist and four steals. He was also the team’s leader in turnovers (with 5), but he missed both his 3-point shots. Want the best stories sent straight to your inbox every day? Follow leagues, players and teams to receive a daily personalized newsletter!
