Last Night in College Basketball: An Overtime Thriller For No. 6 Michigan

Men’s college basketball, women’s college basketball – there’s no shortage of college ball, every night.Don’t worry, we’re here to help you figure out what you missed but shouldn’t have. Michigan narrowly avoids an upsetThe Wolverines, ranked sixth in the country, needed overtime to overcome a fierce Wake Forest team and ultimately won 85-84. Aday Mara, a UCLA transfer, was the Wolverines prized possession on the transfer portal. While Yaxel Lendeborg struggled to perform well. Mara scored a career-high of 18 points with 13 rebounds, and added 5 blocks. In the final possession, he stopped Demon Deacons’ Nate Calmese scoring. Mara’s greatness has always come in bursts. The issue for Mara was always his condition. He played for 37 minutes on Tuesday and showed no signs of fatigue as he led the Wolverines to victory. Lendeborg is still trying to find his spot in the offense, due to the frontcourt’s crowdedness. Wake Forest tried hard to win the game, but they didn’t. Mekhi Mason, Washington transfer guard and senior, scored 16 points and recorded 7 rebounds. He also had 5 assists, 3 steals and logged five rebounds. Juke Harri, Wake’s sophomore forward, led the team in scoring with 19. He also had 6 rebounds and two steals. Myles Collin was a key player off the bench. In 31 minutes he had 13 points, 7 rebounds, a block, an assist and this dunk. It’s a lot of posterizing. Crowd fooledHave you ever seen a crowd in an MLB game get really excited about a fly ball because they mistakenly believe it is a home run? They aren’t paying attention to the outfielders, so they don’t realize that it is actually going to be a routine play? It’s a bit like when you see people on camera celebrating a 3-pointer that didn’t actually go through the net. But hey, everyone watches the ball and not the players. The official also signaled a three-pointer at first. That lets everyone off the hook.More similar to Last Night in College BasketmeowlBaylor’s head coach Nicki Collen has a four-week old kitten. She found it in her car, behind the fender caps, after hearing the kitten meow. As she told the Associated Press, “I tried to bring it back as I know who the mom is, but now he’s here with us. The maternal instinct took over. I wanted to keep it alive since its mom wouldn’t take it. I won’t take it to a shelter.”The kitten was named Sailor in honor of the Sailor Bear logo that Baylor used back in 1950s. South Carolina has a shortage of players, but it doesn’t stop them. South Carolina was already down two players due to ACL injuries, Ashlyn Kitts and Maddy McDaniel. On Tuesday, the Gamecocks did not give a reason as to why they suspended sophomore Maddy McDaniel. Being down a backup guard didn’t hurt them against Clemson, however, as South Carolina took them down, 65-37, using a nine-player rotation. As you could probably discern from the final score, South Carolina’s defense held Clemson in check, but what that alone doesn’t tell you is that not a single player on the Tigers reached double-digits in scoring, while they also lost the battle on the boards, especially on the defensive side: South Carolina pulled down 37 there, with Clemson nabbing 10 offensive boards, on a night with plenty of opportunities to pull one down, given the Tigers shot just 23% – 14-for-61 – for the night.South Carolina also blocked 10 shots, and it wasn’t just their bigger players swatting them down. Ta’Niya Latson was only 5’8” tall, but she still managed to get in on the action. The Gamecocks will play No. Louisville Wins the Battle for Kentucky 12 Louisville took on No. On Tuesday in Louisville, Kentucky defeated No. 12 Louisville 96-88. In a close match, it’s not hard to distinguish yourself. Louisville won because they had more than one reliable source of offense, unlike Kentucky with senior guard Denzel Aberdahl. While Aberdeen was the only player on the Wildcats with more than 12 points – he scored 26 – the Cardinals featured senior guard Ryan Conwell, with 24 points, and freshman guard Mikel Brown, who led all scorers with 29. Brown also added 5 assists and 2 rebounds to his stats. Senior guard J’Vonne Haley provided some relief off the bench, scoring 9 points with 8 rebounds in 27 minutes. Louisville was never running away with it, but these performances ensured that they led throughout the vast majority of the game, and were able to hold on late in the second half even as Kentucky surged to cut the lead from 20 – where it sat with 11:56 to go in the second half, at 78-58 – to just four, 88-84, with 3:16 left in regulation.A 38-point effort out of LincolnThe leading D-I scorer for Tuesday managed as much in a losing effort, with Lincoln guard Laolu Kalejaiye putting up 38 points in a 113-76 defeat against Pepperdine. The Oaklanders had no answer for the Waves’ balanced attack – five of their 11 players scored double-digits, with two more picking up 9, and sophomore guard Yonatan Levy had a double-double thanks to 16 points and 11 boards – but Pepperdine just couldn’t seem to stop Kalejaiye from scoring. He shot 13-22, 12 of which were threes. He made only one two-point basket on four attempts and did not shoot any free-throws. In his 37 minutes, he also did not drop a dime, had neither a steal nor a block but did manage to grab ONE offensive rebound. This was not just a 38-point effort. His teammates scored more than three times that amount against Pepperdine. Those dozen threes are also the most anyone has ever made in the 53 years that Pepperdine’s Firestone Fieldhouse has been their home – the previous record was 9 on 18 attempts – and in the final season for that venue, too. Want to receive great stories in your email? To receive a customized newsletter every day, create or log into your FOX Sports Account and follow teams, leagues and players!
