Julio Cesar Chavez, who had a 56-0 record at super featherweight and was a dominant champion, looked for a challenge in 1987 for his third match.
Before his final defence of the WBC Super Featherweight Belt against Danilo Cabrarera, he announced that this would his last fight in the weight category.
On November 21 in Las Vegas, he moved up to lightweight to challenge the WBA lightweight champion and The Ring’s top ranked fighter in the division, Edwin Rosario.

After being labeled as the underdog for their bout, Rosario questioned the strength of Chavez’s record.
The comments that Chavez only beat “guys out of a bar”, Rosario nearly caused a fight between them when he claimed he’d send the Mexican back to his home country in a coffin.
This certainly wasn’t what happened on fight night, with the challenger letting his actions do the talking as he dominated Rosario from start to finish, landing 61 percent of his strikes compared to his opponent’s 36 percent.
A bloodied and battered Rosario hung on until his corner threw in the towel during the eleventh round, with Chavez’s stunning statement remaining one of his many career highlights.
