Sebastian Fundora isn’t the only giant in his weight class. Another boxer with improbable dimensions – 6ft 6ins and somehow making 154lbs – has entered the sport.
That is Jahvad McDermott, a Los Angeles-based boxer who has just signed with Wise Owl Boxing, a management company led by Mark Habibi. Its stable includes Brandon Adams, Charles Conwell, Julio Cesar Martinez and several prospects.
“Jahvad is a force to be reckoned with,” Habibi said in a press release. “He’s still very young in his boxing career, but his upside is tremendous. His size alone is going to give a lot of fighters in the division a very difficult time, and when you combine that with his power and athleticism, you’re looking at a future star.”
McDermott is 29, though BoxRec currently has him as 24. He is listed as 1-0 (0 KOs), with a four-round majority decision victory in February against the 1-0-1 Solomon Colton.
Wise Owl’s press release says McDermott has had two total pro fights, “with one victory yet to be reflected in official records.”
McDermott’s earlier athletic pursuits included track and field. A 2014 article in San Bernardino, California’s The Sun noted his accomplishments at Redlands High School, where he had “the fourth-best triple jump in school history and the fifth-best high jump in school history.”
He was also on the track and field team at Carson-Newman University in Tennessee, where he graduated in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science.
