Football Join the Miguel Delaney Inside newsletter Football NewsletterJannik Sinner returned to World No. 1 on Sunday by winning the Paris Masters. The Italian will then hold top position over Carlos Alcaraz only for one week, before returning to World No. 2 in Turin at the ATP Tour Finals. Sinner, who won the Paris Masters title without dropping a game in the final, added his 23rd career event and extended his indoor-hard court winning streak of 26 matches. Sinner has now regained the World No. 1 position that Alcaraz had held since September when he won the US Open. Both players will be able to compete for the top spot in the ATP Finals. Once Sinner’s points from winning last season’s ATP Finals are removed from the 52-week rankings, Alcaraz will enter the tournament with a lead of 1,050 points over the Italian. At the ATP Finals players were awarded 200 points for a victory in a round robin match, 400 points for a semifinal win and 500 more for winning the championship. Unbeaten champions with five wins can earn a maximum 1,500 points. How Alcaraz can retain the No. 1 rankingAlcaraz, who will attempt to win the ATP Finals in Paris for the first-time after his shock defeat by Cameron Norrie at the second round of the Paris tournament will try to do so despite the fact that Sinner has reclaimed the No. 1 ranking. The 22-year-old was knocked out in the group stages of last year’s tournament, having been unwell, but will be targeting a deeper run this time to finish what has been the best season of his career in style. Alcaraz, even if Sinner wins ATP Finals unbeaten, can still keep his World No. 1 ranking by taking 500 ranking points. You can achieve this by either winning all three of your round-robins matches or by winning both his semi-final and round-robin. How Sinner can reclaim World No 1 Sinner needs to win the ATP Finals to have any chance of catching Alcaraz and even then, as outlined above, it’s not in the Italian’s hands. A defeat for Sinner during the round-robin would also increase Alcaraz’s chances of finishing top. Sinner would only need two wins if he lost one match; if he lost two matches, Alcaraz’s chances of winning the title would be increased. Sinner, who won the title in Paris said he’d focus on himself at the ATP Finals instead of trying to catch Alcaraz. “In Turin, I’m going to do the same. I watch my side and I just play the best possible tennis I can,” Sinner said “The goal of this week was to go day by day, trying to maximise my potential, which I have done for this week and I’m extremely happy.”
