What The The ” Justin Cal E Ja Bryce Young, a first-year head coach Dave Canales, benched him two games into his sophomore season. We all thought Young would leave Carolina after that. Canales and Morgan’s new GM Dan Morgan were going to get “their guy,” and Young would go elsewhere. After Andy Dalton’s injury, Young returned after a week on the bench to play the remainder of the 2024 NFL season. He cemented his position as the Panthers QB1. The results are encouraging and improving with every passing week. The lesson is that changing head coaches is not always a bad decision, and does not guarantee the growth of a young quarterback. It’s often better to stick with the status-quo, both in the short term and the long term.

Giants avoid the coordinator’s trapIf you are the Giants – and I can’t stress this enough – it is vital that you find the right coach. Joe Schoen will continue to be the general manager and will oversee the coaching search. Nothing else matters if he makes a mistake. What is the ideal guy? I warned about the dangers of falling in love with the coordinators that are currently tearing it up, only to discover they lack the leadership skills to lead an entire team. They have all proven that they are capable of being CEOs. Ben Johnson may join them, but it’s still too early to say. Dennis Allen, Matt Nagy and Brian Callahan had less success as coordinators-turned-coaches, though there are various reasons why they struggled (and Mike McDaniel could join this list if the Dolphins continue to lose).I think the surest, safest way to both develop a young quarterback and get buy-in from the entire team is to look for a leader first, above all else. Think of Vrabel, Dan Campbell, Mike Tomlin, or John Harbaugh. It is even more important to know how to motivate a team of men who have mortgages, families, and problems beyond work. But guess what else? Great leaders hire great talent. Josh McDaniels is helping Drake Maye to improve. Johnson and Aaron Glenn were Campbell’s former assistant coaches. They are now the head coaches at Chicago and New York. Tomlin’s first eight years in Pittsburgh were spent with Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau, who was his defensive coordinator. That group won one Super Bowl and went to two. Harbaugh also employed Rex Ryan as well as Chuck Pagano and Jim Caldwell. Gary Kubiak was Harbaugh’s first NFL head coach. Mike Pettine and Mike Macdonald were all Harbaugh’s other NFL head coaches. The Giants have made their most important coaching hire since a decade. It would be easier to find the new Mike Vrabel if it were simple. Klint Klint’s success as the young offensive coach of the Seahawks is hard to resist. Jesse Minter is the Chargers’ defensive co-ordinator. Steve Spagnuolo, Brian Flores, or Marcus Freeman (a coach at Notre Dame who has a lot of experience and seems to have learned lessons from his mistakes) are they more like Vrabel or Campbell or Tomlin? When it comes to football we tend to overthink things, whether it is evaluating players before the draft or complicating decisions that are otherwise simple. The Giants need more than a coach. You must break the cycle. You need to find the person who is closest to Tom Coughlin. This could be Ben McAdoo over Pat Shurmur or Joe Judge.
