George Springer injury update: Blue Jays slugger likely to stay on World Series roster after tweaking side

The Toronto Blue Jays do not seem likely to remove designated hitter George Springer from their World Series roster after he exited Game 3 with a side injury Monday. Springer would be out of the World Series if he was removed from the team. It was not possible to add him back later.”MRI showed that he’s hour-to-hour, day-to-day, so just see how he kind of navigates the next couple hours,” manager John Schneider said Tuesday before Game 4 (via Sportsnet). “… Currently, you can either choose to be on the field or not.”Springer sustained the injury in Monday’s marathon game 3, which the Blue Jays ultimately lost to the Dodgers by 6-5 after 18 innings. Springer immediately clutched the right side of his body after fouling off a ball in the 7th inning. Soon after he exited the game accompanied by a trainer and was replaced by Ty France: The injury was initially announced as right side discomfort, and Schneider said postgame that Springer had already left to undergo an MRI. The team hasn’t released the results of an MRI. Springer is expected to return to the field at some point this week, even if it’s not until Game 6 and 7 of the series.

Schneider said on Tuesday, “He plays to moments like these.” “I told you yesterday that you’ll be surprised at how hard he worked physically when this season is over. If he is in good shape in any way or shape, I would like George to join the team.Losing Springer in 2025 would be a major blow to Toronto. He is the leadoff hitter, and one of their most productive players. Springer, who is 36 years old, had one of his most productive seasons ever at the plate during the regular-season.

His OPS+ was 161, which led the team, and ranked third in the American League. Springer ranks third on the all-time list of playoff home runs. He is one of MLB’s most prolific power hitters, and he has a record for postseason power hitting. He has batted.246/.323/.561 in the Jays current run. This includes four home runs, six doubles and 14 games.

Joey Loperfido is the most obvious choice to replace Springer if he leaves the roster. Loperfido’s career stats are.248/.297/.392 with eight homers in 122 MLB games over two seasons. As a replacement for Anthony Santander, he was on the roster for a portion of the Blue Jays ALCS victory over the Seattle Mariners. Loperfido was hitless in his only at-bat during that series.
