Former boss Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney have been put in temporary charge at Parkhead. Celtic released a statement saying: Football The club can confirm that Brendan Rodgers, the football manager, has submitted his resignation today. Brendan Rodgers will step down from his position immediately after the club accepts it.”Celtic added: “The club appreciates Brendan’s contribution to Celtic during his two very successful periods at the club. Brendan leaves Celtic with our thanks for the role he has played during a period of continued success for the club and we wish him further success in the future.READ MORE: Brendan Rodgers resigns at Celtic as Martin O’Neill completes shock returnREAD MORE: Ally McCoist backs Hearts to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson and win Scottish title“The process to appoint a new permanent manager is under way and the club will update supporters further on this as soon as possible. We are pleased that during this interim period former Celtic manager, Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player, Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic first-team matters. Further details will be confirmed shortly.”Rodgers was repeatedly criticized by the fans for his handling of the club’s summer business. They demanded the removal of the entire hierarchy. Fans have demanded answers from Desmond as the principal shareholder, CEO Michael Nicholson, and Chairman Peter Lawwell. Desmond released an amazing statement.”I want to acknowledge Brendan’s contribution across his two spells as Manager, during which he helped deliver success that forms part of the club’s modern history.”However, I also must express my deep dissatisfaction at the way things have unfolded over the past few months. When we brought Brendan back to Celtic two years ago, it was done with complete trust and belief in his ability to lead the club into a new era of sustained success.Hearts was the end for Brendan Rodgers(Image: SNS Group)”Unfortunately, his conduct and communication in recent months have not reflected that trust. In June, both Michael Nicholson and I expressed to Brendan that we were keen to offer him a contract extension, to reaffirm the club’s full backing and long-term commitment to him.”He said that he’d need to consider it and then revert. Brendan has implied in subsequent press conferences that the club is not committed to offering him a contract. This was a lie.”We met regularly with Brendan, including in December and the summer of 2012, with regular dialog in between to discuss and agree on our collective strategy, priority, and approach.”Every player signed and every player sold during his tenure was done so with Brendan’s full knowledge, approval, and endorsement. Anything else is false. His public statements on transfers and club operations were completely out of the blue.Michael or any other member of the Board, or executive team, had never raised such concerns prior to his remarks. In reality, he had the final word on all football matters. He also received consistent support in the recruiting process. This included record investments into players he personally selected and approved. In response to his public remarks, I wanted to speak directly with him. Brendan and myself met at his house in Scotland for more than three hours to discuss this issue.”Despite having ample opportunities, he couldn’t identify one instance where the club had failed to assist him or obstructed his progress. Facts did not support his public narrative. Unfortunately, his words, as well as actions, since then, have caused division, been misleading, and were self-serving.”They’ve contributed to a toxic environment around the club, and fuelled hostility toward members of the Executive Team and the Board. Some of the abuse they and their families have received is unwarranted, unacceptable, and completely unwarranted.”Every member on the board and executive team has a deep passion for Celtic, and they act at all time with professionalism, honesty, and a desire to succeed.
