The Texans ruled quarterback C.J. Stroud out for Houston’s Week 10 showdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Stroud is still in the league’s concussion protocol stemming from last week’s loss to the Denver Broncos. With Stroud out, Davis Mills makes his first start since the 2022 season. Mills, a 2021 sixth round pick, made 25 starts in his first two years with the Texans. Mills played in 2 previous games of this year in relief of Stroud. Stroud was forced to leave the game in the early second quarter of last week after his head struck the ground as a result a slide he took. Stroud immediately left the game, and was later ruled out of the remaining contest in the third quarter.

Stroud has had a tough season with the Texans. Houston, which won back-to-back AFC South championships and played in subsequent playoff games is now 3-5. They are behind the Jaguars and Colts in the standings of the division. Houston has had problems in the red area on both sides. The Texans are also the second-to last team in the NFL for third-down conversions. Stroud only ranks 19th among NFL quarterbacks in terms of passing touchdowns. However, he completes a career high 66.5% percent of his passes. After a career high of 12 interceptions in 2024, he has thrown only five picks.

The Texans take on a Jaguars’ team that has been steadily improving under Liam Cohen, a first-year head coach. Jaguars’ pass defence has not been strong, ranking 27th in the NFL in passing yards and 29th in touchdowns allowed. Through eight games, they are second with 11 interception in the NFL.
