Brendan Rodgers has sensationally resigned from Celtic with the club eight points behind shock Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts. This comes during a period of turmoil, as fans have been protesting against the club’s ownership for months after the summer’s limited spending and their failure to qualify in the Champions League League phase. His final match was a 3-1 loss to Hearts in Tynecastle Park. Shaun Maloney and Martin O’Neill, former Celtic midfielders who played for the Hoops in the 1960s and 1970s, have been named interim bosses. In a press release, the club stated: ‘Celtic Football Club confirms today’s resignation of football manager Brendan Rodgers. The Club has accepted Brendan’s resignation and he will step down immediately.’The club appreciates Brendan’s contribution to Celtic during his two very successful periods at the Club.Brendan leaves Celtic with our gratitude for his role in a successful period for the club. We wish him continued success.The Club will inform supporters as soon as it can about the process of appointing a permanent manager.’We are pleased that during this interim period former Celtic manager, Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player, Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic first-team matters.
