Aidan Hutchinson has achieved the childhood dream of all kids who have ever aspired to play for the NFL. After a dominant career at Michigan, the Detroit Lions made Hutchinson the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. This allowed him to play for his hometown team. Hutchinson, who had a stellar career at Michigan University, was the second pick of the Detroit Lions in the NFL Draft in 2022, which allowed him to play with his hometown team. Hutchinson knows it’s part of his plan, even if the younger version of him can’t believe this is happening to him. “I could never have [scripted this any better]Hutchinson said to FOX Sports Charissa Thompson during an exclusive interview with “FOX NFL Sunday.” “Hometown hero. High school, college and NFL. If all goes well, hopefully I will play my entire career here.”Hutchinson responded, “At the moment, I probably wouldn’t believe you,” after he saw a clip showing him at Michigan Stadium as a teenager. In high school, all you do is put one foot in front the other. I’m living the dream. You have to be a lot of faith in God to accomplish this, especially after all the obstacles I felt I had to overcome.”But something happened last year that wasn’t part of Hutchinson dream script. Hutchinson had a dominating start to the 2024 season, but he suffered a horrific leg fracture only seven games in. Hutchinson was forced to end his season prematurely due to the injury, and he had no choice but sit on the bench as the Lions’ Super Bowl hopes were crushed in the Divisional Round. Hutchinson said, “Having it taken away from you was awful.” “It’s something I will never experience again. It’s so exciting to do what you love. “Just gratitude for the moment.” Hutchinson seems to be making good progress so far. Hutchinson has been a defensive player of the year contender for the Lions after six sacks in the first seven games. He is also helping Detroit get off to a good start, with 5-2 record, ahead of their game on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Lions coach Dan Campbell told Erin Andrews, “Aidan Hutchinson appears to be in better shape than he was before the injury last season.” Having Hutchinson at his best is definitely welcome news for Lions. Hutchinson’s rise coincided with Detroit’s surge to title contender status, something that was unthinkable in Hutchinson’s first-half rookie season. “It’s really amazing. [feel like a long time ago]”, he replied. “I call those dark days the 1-6 start. It was rough. It was a rough start, but it set me up for a great return. I was so desperate to get to Detroit in the draft, because Dan is a guy who embodies everything that Detroit stands for, from the grit to the daily competitiveness. When I got to Detroit, I knew that it was going be the perfect fit. “And here we are.” Aidan Hutchinson was forced to miss the majority of 2024 due to fractures in his tibia and fibia. He created the House of Hutch as a way to support children who are battling life-threatening illness. Hutchinson received a lucrative contract but he says that’s not the reason he plays. He said that his foundation commemorates these children every week. I get to see them periodically throughout the year. When I make these kids happy, my success makes them even happier, and they have more to say when I meet them. To me, it’s like a ‘why’ It’s more than my football career and my aspirations.”Of course Hutchinson isn’t as charitable while he’s playing football. He said to Thompson that he hoped to knock down former Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy a few times on Sunday.”Once the block is on, you feel like ‘ahh.’ Hutchinson stated that you must flip the switch when you’re in that field. You’ve got to have a chip on the shoulder. “When the moment comes where we need to make a play, that’s when I feel alive. It’s going be a lot more tension. There will be more chips, and there will also double teams. You have to take advantage when they make a mistake.”Hutchinson, who has recorded 34.5 career sacks after only 46 games in his career, has always done an excellent job of taking advantage his opponent’s errors. It’s not surprising that Hutchinson got a record-breaking contract in August. The guaranteed amount was almost equal to the deal Micah Parsons received. Hutchinson’s contract with the Lions could be just the beginning of something much bigger. He said that his new contract was a “blessing”. “I’m thrilled to be staying here so long.Want great stories delivered straight to your inbox?” Sign up for a FOX Sports account or create one to follow teams, leagues and players and receive a daily newsletter!
