Sebastian Fundora’s representatives are in talks with officials connected to fellow junior middleweight world titleholder Josh Kelly, BoxingScene learned Thursday.
Confirming reports that Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn, Kelly’s promoter, revealed the discussions, the individual speaking to BoxingScene said the conversations are preliminary and haven’t yet touched on open dates or a venue for a unification, although summer or early fall would make sense.
While England’s Kelly, 32, captured the IBF 154lbs belt January 31 by defeating then-titleholder Bakhram Murtazaliev by majority decision in Newcastle, England, Fundora, 24-1-1 (16 KOs), defended his WBC title for the third time Saturday night in Las Vegas with a sixth-round TKO of former unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman.
Fundora, 28, said afterward he wasn’t inclined to call out anyone else in his weight class but was open to fight any champion or elite contender in the stacked crowd.
Elsewhere at 154lbs, unified WBA/WBO champion Xander Zayas announced this week he’s fighting undefeated former unified welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis June 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
