Sean O’Malley was just as shocked as anyone else to see Petr Yan put on the performance of his career to win the bantamweight title last night.
Former champion O’Malley’s big win that earned him his shot at gold two years ago was a contentious decision over Yan, who at the time had already held the gold. After the Russian dethroned Merab Dvalishvili during their UFC 323 match, there is real interest in a rematch.
O’Malley was actually in Las Vegas for fight week as he launched his UFC 324 bout with Song Yadong in controversial fashion. But it appears he didn’t stick around for fight night, and watched with friends back at home in Arizona.

Watching the fights last night, Sean O’Malley was delighted to see his old rivals go at it, particularly Petr Yan over whom he holds a win. The Russian’s every big takedown or shot elicited an enormous response. He seemed to be overjoyed with the result.
