Dricus du Plesis believes Jack Della Maddalena was the one who should have started the clinch
In response to Islam Makhachev’s dominant win at UFC 322, a rule change was suggested because the fight didn’t make for the most entertaining viewing experience.
The Russian challenger recorded over 19 minutes of control time and secured all of his attempted takedowns but wasn’t able to significantly damage his opponent.
The main event at UFC 319, in August, when Khamzat Chimaev sacked middleweight champ Dricus duPlessis, was similar.

Du Plessis was subjected to many of the criticisms that Jack Della Maddalena faced, as fans and other fighters questioned his preparations following a difficult loss.
Du Plessis, in a video he made for Fight Forecast to share his thoughts on last Saturday’s action, said he believed Della Maddalena had one fight adjustment that she should have done.
“With ‘JDM’, I do believe in terms of game plan, he had some brilliant moments when he got his shots off, especially in the clinch. I think he should have initiated the clinch a bit more because when they are standing at range, he would wait and he would be very tentative to throw because he’s scared of the takedown but he gets taken down anyway.”
