San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been ruled out of action with a left calves strain. This injury was sustained in a Friday night loss to Warriors. Wembanyama sat out the Spurs’ win over the Kings on Sunday night and is now expected to be out of action for at least a few weeks, per Shams Charania. The San Antonio Express News reports that a timetable was not given for his return, but he would be reevaluated within two to three weeks. Wembanyama’s third season has started off with an impressive start. He is averaging 26.2 point, 12.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, on 50.2/34.5%/85.7 splits. Wembanyama has emerged as one of the most dominant players in the Western Conference. The Spurs are 9-4 and in fifth place. If he missed three weeks, he would miss 10 games. If a player is a strong early favorite to win Defensive Player Of The Year, and has put himself in the running for Most Valuable Player (or at least a contender), a 10-game absence will leave him little room to satisfy the NBA’s 65-game minimum requirement for major awards.
Wembanyama could only miss an additional seven games to remain eligible for the award. Wembanyama’s award candidacy may be at risk, given that teams limit the number back-to-backs players can play following a calf injury. FanDuel has moved Thunder’s Chet Holmgren (+130), the DPOY favourite, to the top spot. Wembanyama (+400), the second favorite, is now the third choice. De’Aaron Fox will need to be the Spurs’ main offensive weapon in Wembanyama’s absence. San Antonio showed against Sacramento that they can still succeed without Wembanyama by pushing the pace and relying on their talented offensive players without their defensive anchor. Luke Kornet started at center for the Kings, while Kelly Olynyk was moved to the backup position. The Spurs still have two home games left to work out their plan with Wembanyama absent before the heavy road schedule begins. Six of their seven next games will be away from San Antonio and include tough matches with Denver, Minnesota Orlando, and Cleveland.
The Spurs are only 1.5 games behind the Suns, who are eighth in the West. Mitch Johnson will have to learn how to deal with adversity in the early part of the season without his star.
