Anthony Davis injury update: Mavericks star to miss more time with calf strain

Dallas Mavericks have announced that Anthony Davis is expected to be sidelined at least for the next 7-10 day. Davis had missed the Mavericks’ loss to Washington Wizards, on November 8, due to a calf sprain. His re-evaluation indicated that he would remain sidelined for the next 7-10 days. Davis wanted to play in that game but was held out by the Mavericks as he rehabbed from the calf injury he suffered against the Indiana Pacers. Davis, 32 years old, was also urged to return for that game, against the Wizards, by former Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison. Harrison was fired from his position on November 11. Harrison, according to The Athletic, “urged” Davis’ return. The team’s doctors “forbade”, however, Davis from returning, due to concerns that he could tear his Achilles. It was reported the day after Harrison’s dismissal that Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont had requested medical information proving Davis was not at risk of worsening his calf injury before the team allowed him to return. It’s best to not rush, given Davis’ history of injuries, and especially with a calf injury. In the playoffs, we saw how a calf injury can get worse. Tyrese Halliburton tore his Achilles and will miss this season.

If Davis were to worsen his injury, that would tank his trade value and put the Mavericks in an even more precarious situation. Davis could lose his value as a trade and the Mavericks would be in a more dangerous situation. It is better to return fully fit and healthy after a few games than come back too early and make the injury worse. Davis has played in just 14 games for the Mavericks since being traded to Dallas in February as part of the deal that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. On top of Davis having to deal with living in the doom and gloom of Mavericks’ fans wishing they still had Dončić, he also hasn’t been healthy, which makes matters worse. Meanwhile, Dončić has the Lakers out to a 10-4 start, while averaging 34.4 points, nine assists and nine rebounds.

We’ll watch to see if Davis can return in the new time frame that has been announced by the Mavericks. If he fails to return, this will indicate that this calf pull was much more serious than Dallas Davis and Harrison thought it to be.
