Red Sox Reportedly Considering Forming ‘Super Bullpen’ in 2025 MLB Free Agency

Boston Red Sox, who already have a strong starting rotation at their disposal, could try to address some of their pitching issues by building a deeper bullpen. According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Red Sox have been exploring the idea building a “super-bullpen” by possibly signing another high leverage reliever as a complement to Aroldis Chapman. In the report, it is noted that Chapman will not be removed from his role as a closer. However, Boston’s front-office is interested in the idea of adding to the options for the late innings around Chapman and Whitlock. Also, it was noted that the Red Sox’s main priority is to find a starter and an infielder. Especially now that Alex Bregman will be free agent after opting out his contract. Garrett Crochet was a top ace by 2025 when he finished as runner-up in the AL Cy Young vote. Brayan Early and Connelly Bello are right behind him but the staff does not feel comfortable with that trio. Kutter Crawford was out of action for the entire season last year due to wrist and knee injuries. Patrick Sandoval missed the entire 2025 season after undergoing elbow surgery. He signed a 2-year contract with Boston in December 2024 as a free-agent. If the Red Sox decide to go all-in with their super ‘pen idea, The Athletic did note Edwin Díaz is unlikely to be on their radar. The Red Sox have expressed interest in Devin Williams, according to Sammon. The right-hander, who was a New York Yankee in 2025 and had a 4.79 ERA, is now looking to improve his peripheral statistics. He had his best strikeout to walk ratio (3.60), since 2020, and struck out 13.1 batters every nine innings. Williams’ inflated ERA has led to a wide range of opinions about his free-agent worth. MLB Trade Rumors predicted a high-end contract at $68M over four years. Tim Britton of The Athletic predicted a $18 million, one-year deal for the former All-Star. Boston’s bullpen ERA was already the second-best in MLB thanks to Chapman (1.17 ERA over 61.1 innings), and Whitlock (2.25 ERA over 72 innings). Williams is a great candidate to rebound in 2026. Any team would find it difficult to compete with him.
