Mohsin Nqvi, the Interior Minister of Pakistan, confirmed to the parliament that the army and paramilitary forces were deployed to ensure the safety of the Sri Lankan cricket team.”The decision is in response to the suicide attack that took place outside an Islamabad-based court on Tuesday. Twelve people were killed, and 27 others injured. The stadium and hotel of the team are located less than 10 km from the blast. Cricket The board told the team to stay, citing “foolproof” security guarantees. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif claimed that the attacks have put the country in a’state of war’, blaming Afghanistan based militants, and claiming Indian assistance (claims which Kabul and New Delhi deny). The unrest brought back memories of the 2009 Lahore attacks on the Sri Lankan cricket team. This attack halted the sport in Pakistan for almost a decade. Security improvements since then have allowed major teams to return. India won the tournament by beating New Zealand in its final. Pakistan was eliminated at the group stage after losing to both eventual finalists, and receiving a no in their match with Bangladesh.
