If you were hoping another Ole Miss Rebel could head north and become next head coach of New York Giants you may be out of luck. There has always been the question of who would replace Brian Daboll, if New York decided to let him go. Due to the fact that Jaxson is now a franchise cornerstone quarterback, many people have decided to give Lane Kiffin a ring to see if they want to reunite and rejoin their former quarterback in the NFL. Brandon Dart said it was not realistic to have a reunion with Jaxson Dart. “As we texted on our Kiffin and Dart family text thread, I believe Boomer Esiason made a comment in the news today about how they could make a coaching offer to Kiffin. He sent it over, with a smirk, and simply said: ‘It is too cold in New York’. Brandon Dart, speaking to the New York Post’s “Bleav in Ole Miss”, said that it was funny. Jaxson has high regard for him, as we interact with him every week. Kiffin, I believe, is one of Kiffin’s most trusted allies. He uses him as a source of advice in various ways. So, there’s always communication between us and our families. We couldn’t have asked for more of a special relationship between our son and his coach, so we are very grateful to coach Kiff.”
Kiffin was Dart’s coach for three years while at Ole Miss. During his senior year in 2024, the quarterback threw for 4,279 yard and 29 touchdowns with a completion rate of 69.3%. It was his tutelage that helped him to become the first-round draft pick in the NFL Draft of 2025. New York should check if he is interested, considering the close connection they have. Kiffin’s weather may be an issue, but so too is the current state of college football. He could be considered for a number high-profile positions, such as those at LSU and Penn State. He could simply stay at Ole Miss. The Rebels are currently in contention to win the College Football Playoff. Kiffin may be a longshot, but the fact that it is even a discussion shows just how hot Daboll’s seat is at the moment. New York is 2-7 and dead last in NFC East entering Week 10. The club has a current three-game losing streak. This streak includes a loss of 33-32 to the Broncos, where the Giants let Denver score all those points during a frantic comeback in the fourth quarter.
Daboll is currently 20-39-1 as head coach for the Giants. If he does not show signs that he will turn things around before the end, owner John Mara may be forced to make changes. Let’s consider three alternatives if the change doesn’t go to Kiffin. Jesse MinterCurrent position: Defensive Coordinator, Los Angeles ChargersOwnership, fans and both may be looking for an offensively-minded coach to cater to Dart’s development. But don’t overlook a man like Jesse Minter. New York made a lot of investments along the defensive lines in recent years, acquiring Brian Burns and signing Dexter Lawrence for a large-money contract, as well as drafting Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and others, within the top five NFL Drafts. Minter’s leadership could help this unit become the best defensive line in the NFL. Dart and his offense would also benefit.
Minter, the former defensive coordinator of the University of Michigan, followed Jim Harbaugh as the Los Angeles Chargers’ defensive coordinator in the same position. He has presided over some dominating defenses. The Chargers were ranked No. 1 in 2024. In 2024, the Chargers ranked No. In 2025, the Washington Commanders are ranked No. 6 in the league for yards allowed (as of Week 10). Kliff KingsburyCurrent position: Offensive Co-ordinator, Washington CommandersLast season, we saw the former Lions’ offensive coordinator Ben Johnson take a job as the head coach of the division in Chicago. Kingsbury’s work with a young Jayden Daniels has been a great boost to the Commanders offensive system. He could do the same for Dart and his development in New York. He is not only one of the best offensive minds in NFL but he has also been a head coach before, having led the Arizona Cardinals between 2019 and 2022. Kingsbury was only 28-37-1 during that time, but he did have an 11-6 record for 2021. Klint KobiakCurrent role: Head of offensive coordinator for the Seattle SeahawksKubiak’s name is likely to be on the list this year, especially since he turned the Seattle Seahawks team into one that has the league’s best offense. Sam Darnold has played at a MVP level for the past 10 weeks and is averaging 9.5 yards per pass attempt. Jaxon Smith Njigba is the NFL’s leading receiver with 948 receiving yards and is on track to be the league’s first 2,000-yard wide receiver. Could he do the same with Dart, and a healthy Malik Nabers for the Giants.
