Dabo Swinney marched over to Clemson’s defensive bench at the end of the 2nd quarter, Saturday against Duke after Darian Mensah’s fourth touchdown. Mensah’s 43-yard touchdown pass to Que’Sean Brown, who was behind Clemson’s defensive secondary, tied the game with 11 seconds remaining after Duke’s fourth successful fourth-down attempt. Clemson was coming off an open date and allowed the Blue Devils to score 21 points in the first quarter. They fell behind early by two scores before they roared back to take the lead at 28-21 prior to Brown’s 2nd touchdown of the half.
Swinney punched Khalil Barnes, a safety, and other people after Brown blew an opportunity to cover the play.
Mensah had scored four touchdowns and gained 241 yards on 15 of 24 attempts by the time Duke completed all four fourth-downs in the first quarter. Mensah, in addition to Brown’s long touchdown, also found Cooper Barkate open and wide for a 77 yard score.
Clemson could miss a bowl for the first since 2004 if they lose to the Blue Devils. Clemson is yet to miss a bowl game in the 18 years it has been under Swinney. Swinney told reporters before the Duke game that his team was “excited” to play Duke and had “had a great practice week”.
