Botham was left with severe bruising, but he managed to get out of the water quickly enough to avoid the jaws of “quite” a few crocs, thanks to Hughes. On the field there were also many knocks. He broke his toe in 1977 after stepping on the ball during a Headingley match. This led to him being admitted to hospital. It was there that he stumbled across a ward dealing with kids suffering from leukaemia, inspiring his future efforts to raise money for research on it. He was also hindered by a severe injury to his back in 1988. He fell awkwardly after diving for a catch on the slips. As a result, 30 years later he had to have surgery on his spine. Botham had always been a lionhearted man and continued to play cricket. David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd appeared on The Overlap with Betfair’s Stick to Cricket show.
