Indiana Fever 2025 was a season to remember. DeWanna Bonner, a key free agent signed by the Indiana Fever, mysteriously left the club without explanation and then signed with Phoenix Mercury once she was waived. Lexie Hull, Fever’s guard, revealed in a recent interview with Glamour that Bonner’s unannounced departure hurt initially but brought the team closer together. “I was super super super excited because there’s finally a [player in my position] Hull said Bonner is someone she can look up too, who has accomplished so much in the league. She knows what it takes and can teach me a thing or two. “She leaves at random, and everyone is left wondering what happened.” No explanation was given.”Bonner climbed to the third spot on the WNBA’s all-time score list in her very first game, but her first weeks with the Fever were disappointing. Bonner, who was not her usual self offensively, was benched by the Fever after just three games.
Bonner quit the Fever mid-June due to “personal” reasons, as described by the team. After her absence lasted nearly two weeks, rumors began to spread that Bonner had asked for a trade. In the end, the Fever released Bonner on 25 June. Bonner, who had been booed at her return to Indianapolis by fans, told reporters later that she would “not do anything differently.” Bonner went on to say, “I believe my journey is mine and I will accept that.” “It brought me where I am in Phoenix now, and it happened this way for a purpose.”
The Fever have had a season of injuries. Bonner’s abrupt departure was no exception. Caitlin, the star guard, was limited to just 13 games by a series of injuries to her lower body. She was one of 5 players – Chloe Bibby (who also suffered a season-ending injury), Sydney Colson, Sophie Cunningham & Aari Mcdonald – who were injured during the regular-season. Damiris Datas was forced to miss the entire post-season due to a concussion. Kelsey Mitchell had to leave her team’s final defeat of the regular season with rhabdomyolysis. “To have no reason” [for Bonner’s departure] The challenge was great, but I believe it brought us closer together, because we thought, “Allright, this is who we are.” We’re here. We will support each other. We’re all in love with each other. We’re going fight for eachother. We won’t leave. Hull stated, “We’re all in this together.” Hull said that the Fever did not have one starting lineup for more than nine consecutive games and had 18 players appear in at least one match. The team managed to win five of their last seven games, not only securing a playoff position but also moving up to No. The team was a No. 6 seed and then had a remarkable run to the semi-finals.
In the semifinals, the Fever took the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces into overtime for the decisive Game 5. Mitchell’s early departure in that game would have prevented the Fever from reaching the Finals.
